Wales Violence against Women Action Group Briefing

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) is launching a consultation on a Strategic Action Plan to address violence against women (VAW) and to update their Domestic Abuse Strategy (2005). The consultation was launched on June 22 and the deadline for responses is September 14.

We are asking Wales Violence against Women (VAW) Action Group members and key partners to use this briefing to respond to the consultation, including at WAG’s imminent consultation events.

Consultation Events

As a starting point, WAG is holding 3 consultation events, which we strongly encourage members and women’s organisations in Wales to attend:

Wednesday 24 June – Holiday Inn, Newport

Thursday 25 June – Halliwell Centre, Carmarthen

Thursday 2 July – Theatre Clwyd, Mold

The consultation will be based around WAG’s new ‘Strategic Action Plan to Address VAW and Update WAG’s Domestic Abuse Strategy’ (attached). The following questions will be asked at events:

1.       Discuss and list 7 actions within the plan which you consider are the least difficult for you to achieve in your community and why?

2.     Discuss and list 7 of the actions within the plan which you consider are the most difficult to achieve in your community and why?

3.     What do you feel are the barriers to achieving progress (excluding budgets)?

4.     What and where do you see the gaps in the action plan?

5.     What do you think is required to address these gaps?

We believe that attendees from the group will be best-placed to answer the first two questions for their own organisations and service users. This briefing will therefore concentrating on barriers to progress and the main gaps in the Action Plan.
