Two Events in Merthry Raise Awareness of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women/White Ribbon Day
20 Nov 2008- 130 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (UNICEF).
- 5,000 women die every year in "honour" killings perpetrated by family members (UN Population Fund).
- It is estimated that less than 5 per cent of rape prosecutions lead to convictions globally.
Figures like these are only part of the story. Violence against women is a daily occurrence for many women and girls and in many cases, it is accepted as an inevitability. This is wrong.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, invites everyone - women, girls, men and boys - to take a stand, wear a white ribbon and state, categorically, that violence against women and girls must be STOPPED.
To mark this International cause, two events are planned to be held in Merthyr:
1) Monday 24th November, Rhyd - Y - Cae Leisure Centre. To coincide with the Launch of the Community Safety Partnership Strategy, from 12 noon onwards.
2) Tuesday 25th November, Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr 10am-4pm. A stand will be setup by the TEULU Service with representatives from multi-agencies, including DART and Merthyr Women's Aid.
Please come along and support these two events, and help say NO to violence against women and girls.
