Brecknock Women's Aid Highlight the International Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women
12 Nov 2008Brecknock Women’s Aid are inviting women to participate in a free day of events that highlights the campaign to end violence against women on White Ribbon Day November 25th.
" Women and children in and around Brecon living with violence and abuse often feel frightened, ashamed and to blame for what they are experiencing, but we want to let them know they are not alone, there is support available and that we can offer them a safe place to stay if they want. Brecknock Women’s Aid also run a service supporting women in their own homes if their partners are no longer living there."
Domestic abuse will only lessen if we as a society utterly condemn it and the White Ribbon campaign is the largest effort in the world, of men working to end men’s violence against women. Started by Canadian men in response to the massacre of 14 women engineering students, Michael Kaufmann, campaign co-founder states "if it were between countries we’d call it a war. If it were a disease we’d call it an epidemic. If it were an oil spill, we’d call it a disaster. But it’s happening to women, and it’s just an everyday affair." Men around the world are urged to wear a white ribbon and take as a personal pledge:
- Never to commit violence against women
- Never to condone violence against women
- Never to remain silent about violence against women
- The abuse of a woman, by a partner, ex-partner or father doesn’t have to involve physical violence- but that’s how it’s often perceived.
Domestic abuse also includes the actual or threatened emotional, psychological, sexual or financial abuse of a woman by someone she’s in or has been in a close relationship with- and it also includes allowing a child to witness abuse. Hearing abuse taking place can be equally damaging to children.
