Carmarthen Women's Aid - White Ribbon Day Events
4 Nov 2008Violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families, and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence — yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned. — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, 8 March 2007
In 1999, the UN designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981.
To mark this international event, Carmarthen Women's Aid will be holding an event in Carmarthen Town Centre.
Staff and volunteers from Carmarthen Women's Aid will be making a collection for their refuge and community projects, as well as trying to raise the profile of the international campaign to eliminate violence against women. They will also be providing information leaflets, publications and resources which promote the Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline and provide further information about domestic abuse.
They also have a number of enamel white ribbon badges, which they will be selling on the day to anyone who is interested.
