Comment on the Wendy Ellis verdict by Welsh Women's Aid
19 Oct 2007A spokeswoman from Welsh Women’s Aid said, "As an organisation, we are against violence in relationships, whatever form the violence manifests itself in.
"Domestic violence occurs across communities and society, regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, wealth and geography. Domestic Abuse is not a one-off incident; more usually it's a pattern of systematic and sustained abusive and controlling behaviour through which the abuser seeks power over their victim. The figures show, however, that it consists mainly of violence by men against women.
"To put domestic abuse in context; 42% of all female homicide victims compared with 4% of male homicide victims, were killed by current or former partners in England and Wales between 2000 and 2001. On average a woman will be assaulted by her partner or ex partner 35 times before reporting it to the police.
"Welsh Women's Aid believes that no one should live in fear. Domestic abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual or financial and is often not recognised or is misunderstood. The earlier someone is able to engage support, the sooner they can begin the process of changing their life.
