Violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families, and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence — yet the reality is that too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned

White Ribbon Day / International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

05 Tachwedd 09

wrd 09 The White Ribbon campaign is the largest effort in the world, of men working to end men’s violence against women. Started by Canadian men in response to the massacre of 14 women engineering students, Michael Kaufmann, campaign co-founder states "if it were between countries we’d call it a war. If it were a disease we’d call it an epidemic. If it were an oil spill, we’d call it a disaster. But it’s happening to women, and it’s just an everyday affair."

Two women a week are killed by a current or former partner

130 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (UNICEF).

5,000 women die every year in "honour" killings perpetrated by family members (UN Population Fund).

In 1999, the UN designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. There are a number of regional, and international events taking place and Welsh Women's Aid would like to know what you will be doing to mark the event.

Please contact Kirstie Pavey if you would like your event to be advertised on the WWA website.
